The Oak Ridge Boys are a vocal quartet hailing from Oak Ridge, Tennessee, United States who formed in 1947. Since their debut, the band have released thirty three albums to date, and have become one of the truly legendary acts of southern gospel music.

The band was originally formed by another country band called Wally Fowler and the Georgia Clodhoppers, who were booked to play a show at a nuclear research plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee for the staff and their families. The group went down so well that they were invited back time and time again, until the band decided to pay tribute to them and changed their name to The Oak Ridge Quartet. By 1947, this new, acapella incarnation group had made such a name for themselves that they had performed their first slot at the Grand Ole Opry, and been invited into the studio for album releases and radio sessions. However, this didn't stop every member of the band save for Fowler himself leaving in 1949 to set up their own group Curley Kinsey and the Tennessee Ridge Runners.

Fans of legendary folk icons The Kingston Trio can re-discover their timeless music all over again. In celebration of nearly 65 years of music, the iconic folk group performs their best-loved songs as part of the ‘Keep The Music Playing’ national tour.

The group will perform in Colorado Springs at Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts on October 1, 2021. Tickets go on sale on June 25 at 10 am and are available at KingstonTrio.com, PikesPeakCenter.com and AXS.com.

All three current members, Mike Marvin, Tim Gorelangton and Don Marovich have intrinsic links to and experience with the original group: Mike is the adopted son of founding member Nick Reynolds, who was also his musical mentor; Tim, a close friend since boyhood, is one of the few musicians outside the Trio who has recorded with Nick Reynolds; and Don Marovich, who also toured with the Trio. Many of their personal memories recall the iconic trio’s performances and journey as folk music made its extraordinary ascent to the pinnacle of popular culture – and the top of the music charts.  They’ll perform such timeless classics “Where Have All The Flowers Gone?” and “Tom Dooley”.

8:00 am — Museum doors open

9:00 am — Presentation

9:45 am — Corsair Walk-Around and Start-Up

10:00 am — Corsair Taxi and Takeoff

This special event will be held in the WestPac Hangar, located on the museum campus. The presentation will be made in front of the museum’s F3A-1 Corsair, which will be flown subject to weather conditions and runway availability.  There’s no additional charge for this event — just purchase a ticket to the museum in advance and arrive early so you can be in place for the presentation. Doors will open at 8 am.

The Corsair was an outstanding naval fighter during the latter half of the Pacific war. It was both an excellent air-to-air fighter and a great ground-support aircraft. It is best known for its role in the South Pacific where the Marines used it with devastating effect in the island campaigns. This presentation will focus on the development of the Corsair and its performance in combat with special emphasis on VMF-214, the Black Sheep Squadron led by Greg “Pappy” Boyington. It will also cover the history of the museum’s F3A-1 Brewster-built Corsair.

Matt Ouding, a longtime civilian and military aviator, will tell the story of the Corsair in World War II.
